Summary

[edit]
Description

James Busby was the British Resident in New Zealand from 5 May 1833 until the arrival of William Hobson in January 1840, when he was relieved of his official duties. Busby's role, outlined in instructions from Governor Richard Bourke, was to protect 'well-disposed settlers and traders', to prevent outrages by Europeans against Māori and to apprehend escaped convicts. However, apart from the occasional naval visit, Busby was provided with no means of enforcing his authority.

During his time as British Resident, Busby had a hand in the establishment of the United Tribes flag (www.flickr.com/photos/archivesnz/16753874596), He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tireni (the 1835 Declaration of Independence of New Zealand: www.flickr.com/photos/archivesnz/10430000633), and the drafting of te Tiriti o Waitangi (www.flickr.com/photos/archivesnz/15399608344). Correspondence from Busby about Māori-Pākehā relations before 1840 can be found in the British Resident record group at Archives New Zealand (archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewEntity.do?code=AABS), while a full biography can be found online at www.teara.govt.nz/en/biographies/1b54/busby-james

This portrait of James Busby comes from a Souvenir Programme produced for the 1940 Centennial of te Tiriti o Waitangi.
