Description
English: Jagiellonian tapestry (God Blessing Noah and His Family from the series The Story of Noah) of Sigismund II Augustus (King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania), manufactured in Brussels, Flanders, circa 1550, exhibited in the Great Renaissance Hall of the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania in Vilnius in 2023.
The Italian tradition is very apparent in this textile. The figure of Noah, seen from behind and much larger than the others, is particularly impressive. Noah turns to the heavens; above him, God descends from the clouds, with a host of angels. The evocative fragment is a copy of a late Raphael work, Ezekiel's Vision, realised as both a painting and a tapestry cartoon. The group of Noah's sons adoring the Creator is modelled after the apostles in the Ascension of Christ tapestry, which is part of Leo X's series of tapestries designed by Raphael's pupils, woven in Brussels in 1524–1530.
