Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Jagiellonian tapestry (Abel's Sacrifice from the series The Story of the First Parents) of Sigismund II Augustus (King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania), manufactured in Brussels, Flanders, circa 1550, exhibited in the Great Renaissance Hall of the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania in Vilnius in 2023.
The scene in which Abel makes his sacrifice to God has a composition divided by a great pillar of fire and smoke rising to the heavens from the sacrificial altar. On the left Abel is visibile kneeling on a stone, raising his arm to God who, accepting his sacrifice, blessed him from the clouds. Kneeling in front of him is the surprised and dumbfounded Cain, who shields himself from the heat of the fire. An angel accompanies the just Abel, while next to Cain is a personification of envy and evil – a woman with the head of a wolf hidden on her breast. These qualities of tapestry were not lost in a late replica, from about 1660, held by the National Museum – Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania.
