Text Appearing Before Image:
f Painters of Venice and painterof the famous Lion of St. Marc in the Ducal Palace andthe Madonna M in the Venice Academy, Jacobello del Fiorewas a man of great distinction in his day. He also has alarge picture, Coronation of the Virgin, in the sacristyof the Duomo at Ceneda. He was a pupil of his father,Francesco. The Madonna in this composition kneels beforethe Child in adoration ; behind is a diversified landscape fullof symbolism; nearby, curiously arranged, is the cow in themanger, and the Babe, entirely nude, appeals to the Mother.A nimbus is over the Virgins head, and a long dark cloakfalls in regular lines from her shoulders. The early primi-tive Italian manner is apparent in the treatment of thedetails and the arrangement of the personages, and, as wasusual in the works of these early painters, there is greatsincerity, deep religious conviction, and a profound feelingof devotion throughout. Formerly in the collection of Col. Hankey. Now in the collection of Mr. J. G. Johnson.

The lady in this portraitwears over her black dress an embroidered white collar andcuffs, on the painting of which the artist has performedwonders. The simplicity of the brush-work and the manage-ment of the whites are truly remarkable, yet these in nowise detract from the excellence of the flesh-painting, theface receiving the most careful attentio
