nseless on the ground. Youve settled him, cried my second. Whats done cant be helped, replied I. Is he dead ? Whats all this ? cried Mr. Knapps, pressing his waythrough the crowd, followed by the matron. Barnaby and Cinderella having it out, sir, said one of theelder boys. The matron, who had already taken a liking for me, becauseI was good-looking, and because I had been recommended toher care by )Mrs. Drummond, ran to me. Well, says she, if the Domine dont punish that big brutefor this, Ill see whether Im anybody or not ; and taking meby the hand, she led me away. In the meantime Mr. Knappssurveyed Barnaby, who was still senseless, and desired theother boys to bring him in, and lay him on his bed. Hebreathed hard, but still remained senseless, and a surgeon wassent for, who found it necessary to bleed him copiously. He 29 JACOB FAITHFUL then, at the request of the matron, came to me ; my featureswere undistinguishable, but elsewhere I was all right. As 1stripped he examined my arms.

Whats all this?Copyright 1895 by MacniiUan &■ Co. It seemed strange, observed he, that the bigger boyshould be so severely punished ; but this boys arms are like 30 JACOB FAITHFUL little sledge-hammers. I recommend you, said he to the otherboys, not to fight with him, for some day or other hell killone of you. This piece of advice was not forgotten by the other boys, and from that day I was the cock of the school. The name ofCinderella, given me by Barnaby, in ridicule of my mothersdeath, was immediately abandoned, and I suffered no morepersecution. It was the custom of the Domine, whenever twoboys fought, to flog them both ; but, in this instance, it wasnot followed up, because I was not the aggressor, and myadversary narrowly escaped with his life. I was under thematrons care for a week, and Barnaby under the surgeonshands for about the same time. Neither was I less successful in my studies. I learntrapidly after I had conquered the first rudiments ; but I hadanother difficulty
