Description |
English: Satire on the 1747 Westminster election: a scene outside Westminster Hall with, on the left, supporters of the successful candidates (Viscount Trentham and Admiral Sir Peter Warren) including a group of sailors, one of whom is Indonesian; on the right, Jacobite supporters of the losing candidates (Sir Thomas Clarges and Sir Thomas Dyke) including several Scotsmen and a Frenchman, "Monsieur Trompee", gathered at a house from which flies a flag lettered "Morgan's Ghost" with an owl in lawyer's wig and bands; a devil flies above. 13 February 1747

Notes |
The Jacobites represented were members of the Club of Independent Electors of Westminster of which Clarges was steward in 1747. The lawyer David Thomas Morgan was executed on Kennington Common in the previous year for his part in the Jacobite Rebellion. Henry Fielding used the pseudonym John Trott-Plaid in his "Jacobite's Journal" (December 1747- November 48), which was in fact an anti-Jacobite, and it is possible that he suggested the design for this print. |

[edit]This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
