| Description | The Jackson Park Historic Landscape District and Midway Plaisance in Chicago (1869). The park was founded in the the late 1860s, but developers became disinterested in its development following the Great Chicago Fire. For years, the park remained swampy and unusable However, it became the home to the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. It was designed by famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead. The Midway Plaisance, a thin strip of land between Jackson and Washington parks, became the amusement center of the fair, and to this day, the term "midway" still refers to a stretch of carnival rides. It was the site of the original Ferris Wheel, which carried over 1.5 million riders during the fair. The University of Chicago Maroons were originally known as the "Monsters of the Midway" due to their proximity to the park. After the university dropped their football team, the nickname stuck with another local club, the Chicago Bears. |
