The town was crowded with wounded and sicksoldiers, and their appearance attracted no attention whatever.In the principal street the lads saw many names of Englishfirms over offices, and the majority of the shops appeared tobe kept by Frenchmen and Germans. They walked down to thewharves and saw how great must have been the trade carried onbefore the war. Now all traffic and business was at an end. The great foreign merchants interested in the corn trade had allleft, and many of the shops were closed. The harbour was deserted,save that a score or two of brigs employed in the coasting-tradein the Black Sea lay moored by the wharves with hatches batteneddown and deserted decks. A little farther out lay at anchor twoor three frigates and some gun-boats. Looking seaward, not asingle sail broke the line of the horizon.
