Description
Flag of Jordan
This is a photo of a monument in Jordan identified by the ID
ID JA-01. The city of Jerash, known in ancient times as Gerasa, rises in a broad and fertile valley on the banks of the Chrysorrhoas River. The site was peopled from the third millenium B.C. onward. The first permanent settlements date back to the bronze and early Iron Ages (second millennium B.C.). The city area was settled by Semitic peoples. When Alexander the Great conquered the area in 334 B.C., Gerasa became the site of a Macedonian Greek colony. The city got a new lease on life when the Romans conquered it in 64-63 B.C. The history and evolution of Jerash is very long and very interesting.
