LEPLEY, Sergeant, Company M, 168th Infantry, 42nd Division.On July 28th, near Sergy, he led his platoon for-ward in the face of heavy machine-gun fire, and inspite of being wounded, captured six machine-gunsand thirteen prisoners from the Prussian Guards.Near Souain, to the northeast of Chalons-sur-Marne,on the night of July 14, 1918, Sergeant Lepley lefthis trench and returned to the woods, through asmothering fire of gas, high explosives and shrapnel,to search for two men of his platoon who were miss-ing. He found them lost in the woods and guidedthem safely back to the platoon.Distinguished Service Cross. (149 )

JAMES A. MEISSNER, Major, Air Service, Pilot, 147th Aero Squadron.For extraordinary heroism in action in the Toulsector May 2, 1918. This was while Meissner, then a lieutenant, was at-tached to the 94th Aero Squadron. This engage-ment was with a German Albatross Scout—the firstenemy plane he had seen in the air. He was flyinga Nieuport and in the combat the entering wedge andupper surface of fabric were torn away from the wingof his plane and he was subjected to heavy fire fromanti-aircraft batteries, but by a skilful operation andcool judgment, he succeeded in making a landingwithin the American lines. A Bronze Oak Leaf wasawarded Meissner, then Captain, for each of the fol-lowing acts of heroism in action:On May 30, 1918, he attacked two enemy planes atan altitude of 4500 meters, and after a sharp en-gagement shot one down in flames and forced theother back into its own territory.
