| Description | Senecio palmeri—Palmer's sagewort. A rare plant endemic to Guadalupe Island at the southern end of California Floristic Province. When Edwin Palmer first collected the plant in 1875 he noted it was abundant on the northern end of Guadalupe. By the time Palmer returned in 1889 "...spots that contained a thicket of it have now but dead plants, with a few scattering plants alive." The plant was a victim of feral goats, like many other island species around the world. The species has recovered somewhat now that the goats have been removed. Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA. |
