Description Arctostaphylos uva-ursi var marinensis—lighthouse manzanita. Jim Roof, the first director of Regional Parks Botanic Garden, proposed variety marinensis for this manzanita in 1980. Splitting A. uva-ursi into varieties and subspecies seems to have been the rage around that time. Few, if any, of these varieties are recognized these days. They are now included in a long list of synonyms for the current thinking is to emphasize how widespread A. uva-ursi is and to smooth over minor differences. Jim Roof, always ready to defend his rights of priority, battled Richard Hildreth, then director of the Saratoga Horticultural Foundation, who introduced this same "variety" as a cultivar named Arctostaphylos uva-ursi 'Point Reyes'. The cultivar is still available and the plant is better known under the cultivar name than under the varietal name. This manzanita in plantings away from the wind-swept Point Reyes headlands will mound to a height of four feet or so with the passage of time.
