Opuntia basilaris—beavertail. One of the joys of April in the deserts of California is always spotting a beavertail cactus in full bloom. You can find them from nearly sea level to over 6,000 feet in the eastern Sierra. They grow well in the Alabama Hills, as lovers of Western movies will attest and are everywhere in Joshua Tree National Park. This specimen was collected in the Eastern Sierra Nevada and is quite happy in the Sierran section of our garden. Beavertails lack the spines of other cactus species but the more than make up for the lack with the hairy glochids that can be quite paintful and are nearly impossible to remove. Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA . |
