Text Appearing Before Image:
ing down of speed was ordered bj^ thecommander of the Titanic. There were other warnings, too, he said. In the twenty-four hours run ending the 14th,declared Colonel Gracie, the ships run was 546 miles, and we were told that the next twenty-four hours wouldsee even a better record posted. No diminution of speed was indicated in the runand the engines kept up their steady work. When Sun-day evening came we all noticed the increased cold, which gave plain warning that the ship was in closeproximity to icebergs or ice fields. The officers, I am credibly informed, had beenadvised by wireless from other ships of the presence oficebergs and dangerous floes in that vicinity. The seawas as smooth as glass and the weather clear, so that itseemed that there was no occasion for fear. When the vessel struck the passengers were solittle alarmed that they joked over the matter. Thefew who appeared upon deck early had taken their timeto dress properly and there was not the slightestindication of panic.
