Description
English: BLUE WHALE

These are the largest of all whales. They can grow to a length of 31 metres and can weigh 180 000 kg. Blue whales feed almost exclusively on krill (small shrimps) that they filter from the sea, using the baleen plates in their jaws. the summer feeding season an adult blue whale may consume as much as 4000 kg of kill per day.

over 300 000 blue whales were killed in the Southern Ocean between 1909 and 1905, and the population is now severely depleted. It may take as much as a century before the blue whales recover to near their original numbers.
