Ehling, JNG 55/56, 2005/2006, 111 ff. (mit Quellenzitaten). - Iulianus war der Sohn des Iulius Constantius, eines Sohnes des Constantius I. Chlorus, und der Basilina. Sein Vater wurde wie viele andere Angehörige der Familie Opfer der Säuberungen vom September 337 n. Chr. Iulianus wurde 331 n. Chr. in Constantinopolis geboren und im christlichen Glauben erzogen. 351/352 trat er heimlich zum alten Glauben über, blieb aber nach außen Christ. Nach der Hinrichtung seines Halbbruders Constantius Gallus wurde Iulianus streng überwacht und konnte nur durch die Fürsprache der Kaiserin Eusebia gerettet werden. Am 6.11.355 n. Chr. wurde er als Flavius Iulianus zum Caesar ernannt und mit Helena, einer Schwester des Constantius II., verheiratet. Iulianus war für den Westen des Reiches zuständig und konnte wichtige Erfolge an der Rheingrenze erringen. Anfang 360 n. Chr. wurde er von seinem Heer zum Augustus ausgerufen und stand nun vor einem militärischen Konflikt mit Constantius II., der nur durch dessen Tod im November 361 vermieden werden konnte. Iulianus zog nun in die Hauptstadt und im Frühling 363 n. Chr. in den Krieg gegen die Sasaniden. In der Nacht vom 26. zum 27. Juni 363 n. Chr. wurde Iulianus bei Maranga am Tigris im Gefecht schwer verwundet und starb wenige Stunden später. Er wurde erst in Tarsos, dann in der Apostelkirche in Constantinopolis bestattet. Iulianus gilt als letzter Verteidiger des alten, heidnischen Glaubens und Förderer der antiken Philosophie. Er wurde von der christlichen Kirche geächtet, die ihm den Beinamen „Apostata“ (der Abtrünnige) gab. Literatur: RIC VIII Nr. 320; LRBC Nr. 469; Beger, Thes. Pal. 380 = Beger, Thes. Br. II 821.
