Text Appearing Before Image:
ently picturesque especially were the groups of womengoing up and down with pitchers and burthens on their heads! Or else pausing torest and leaning over the parapet to gaze after the distant ships at sea ! And the womenof Anacapri are of purer race, and therefore handsomer and prouder than those of thelower town. Up here in Anacapri the air is deliciously pure, and the soil produces all kinds oftreasures in rich abundance, such as the hill districts of the Napolctano alone can boastof. The people, however, are poor but contented; and if there be still a paradise onearth, it is Anacapri. What does it know of the changing years ?—what of the bustlesof the world ? But the happiest man of all Anacapri is the hermit, who passes hisexistence on the highest point of the island ! The hermitage is perched on the summitof Monte Solaro like a falcons nest, and the solitary man sits up here like a sentinel ofOlympus, surrounded by winds and clouds, and sees the earliest gleam of the sun behind
Text Appearing After Image:
OF THE THE ISLAND OF TIBERIUS. 429 the Lucanian Apennine, and his latest rays as he sinks into the western sea. He is usedto these grand spectacles ; but to us, beholding it but for once, it seems to fill the soulwith a flood of beauty. Shall we descend once more into the shining sea-chamber of the Blue Grotto ?Shall we listen to the secret of the waves, and try to paint these mysterious splendours ?
