Of the originalmonastery, as it arose according to Benedicts plan, only a few wall fragments remain.For the fate which the stormy Middle Ages brought to all countries, did not spare it, andmore than once the torch of war was hurled into its quiet courtyards. What we see nowis a large mass of building, almost like a city, dating from the last century, and allowingfree entrance to light and air. But if you step outside the portal, you find yourself atonce in the midst of the mountain wilderness, in whose glimmering depths the eye soonloses itself. It is like a dream to see these modern times glide past on iron rails throughthe valley at our feet; it is like a dream to hear the shrill whistle of the locomotive as itcarries a caravan of travellers southward to the distant Naples.
