GIRL OF THE MOUNTAINS NEAR SALERNO. Yes ; the land that lies before thee on the waters is Naples,—the dreamed of, longed for,Naples ! The land of mirth and song, of love and cheerfulness ;—the land of the. laureland myrtle, the Greece of Italy! Knowest thou it well ? She sleeps still beneath rose-tinted veils of morning, this Venus of the flower-scented Z Z 2 356 ITALY. shores. But even in slumber a smile of enchantment plays upon her lips, and her breathmoves softly over the drowsy waters that bathe her feet, like the perfume of the orangeand citron which adorn her luxuriant tresses. Her head reposes on the vine-grown slopesof Posilippo, and the transparent veil which covers her flows out even to the foot of yonfire-crowned mountain, that smokes like her own sacrificial altar. A thousand great stars,far more beautiful than any we behold in the cold north, glide above her head ; and atthe first joyful breeze of morning her lovely limbs begin to stir, and she opens her eyesbeaming
