In the immediate neighbourhood is the favourite valley of Poussin, who came toRome in 1624, a poor wandering painter. He was a treasure-finder, who knew how todiscover and raise the most precious treasures of Nature with his magic wand. He andhis friend Claude Lorraine were the great prophets of landscape painting, and they bothknew how to breathe upon the canvas the sweet mysterious charm of Italian nature asno other has ever done; and so that when we see their pictures far from Rome, our soulseems to move its wings, longing to fly back to the sunny land of Art. We are nerving ourselves for our departure from beloved Rome. We are bound forthe Campagna and the mountains, and our hearts are heavy. But they will be heavier
