He andhis friend Claude Lorraine were the great prophets of landscape painting, and they bothknew how to breathe upon the canvas the sweet mysterious charm of Italian nature asno other has ever done; and so that when we see their pictures far from Rome, our soulseems to move its wings, longing to fly back to the sunny land of Art.
