its foliage.The bank is partly overgrown with reeds, but ere they have climbed far up the slope,they are met by a green barrier of vines. Behind all this, rise white gleaming walls,and groups of houses. Butterflies flutter close to the surface of the stream, their tinyshadows dancing on the ripples, and pursued by sunbeams that dart through every open-ing in the wind-stirred foliage. A blue heaven flecked with golden clouds, is reflected inthe glassy waters. Then the sun begins to sink. Solemn shadows overspread the vale, but the eveningpurple mingles with them, and dyes the leaves with the wondrous, magic tints of faery.Swarms of swallows play around the stream, or, skimming joyously above it, dip theirwarm breasts in the golden water, before they fly home to their nests among the ruins ofa glorious past. Then night descends upon the branches. The waters sob and sigh asthey hasten towards the fall whose rush is heard in this still evening hour ; and the moonrises above the tree-tops.
