It looks like the crater of an extinct volcano, and is covered Avith ascanty vegetation. It is admirably adapted for a military post of observation, for Romeis seen from hence in its whole extent. Our way leads hence up to the sacred seat ofthe gods of these mountains of Albano. This is no common road ; it is the ancient ViaTriumphalis, which led to the temple of Jupiter Latialis, the protecting deity of the LatinConfederation. This road was trodden by the allied peoples when they celebrated theannual festival of the federation, and resounded beneath the hoofs of the Roman horsesbearing their warrior masters with myrtle-wreathed helmets, to celebrate a triumph on thesacred hill. Within the eighteenth century the ancient temple was still standing intolerably good preservation ; but then monkish superstition suppressed it, and that bymeans of an Englishman, Cardinal York, the last of the Stuarts, who erected the uglymonastery on the site of the beautiful temple, and dedicated it to the Trinity.
