Text Appearing Before Image:
TO ETNA. 467 At about eight thousand five hundred feet above the sea vegetation finally ceases, and the region of snow begins ; which, however, is nearly all melted in summer, or limitedto the shadiest hollows. Here, at an altitude of eight thousand nine hundred feet, standsthe Torre del Filosofo ; and at about nine thousand two hundred feet, the Casa Inglese, the highest building on the island. There to the northare the Peloritanian mountains, and fair Messina, with the straits whose waters roll likea strong river from sea to sea ! Yonder is the stern Calabrian range, clothed with darkwoods, and seamed with many a black ravine. To the west the honeyed Hybla stretcheshis soft slopes ; to the east and to the south,—down there, sheer below us, falling steepinto the sea,—t
