he island in the timeof the Spanish viceroys : especially under the leadership of the fierce Barbarossa. Thehistory of the island furnishes another name connected with the annals of the Hohen-staufens : Giovanni da Procida. He was the originator of the Sicilian Vespers, in whichhe would fain have washed away in torrents of French blood the stain of Conradinsexecution, which he witnessed in the market-place at Naples. He was a nobleman ofSalerno, and the island of Procida belonged to him. From the last gardens of the island we look upon the desert little islet of Guevara,which is only a bit of the wall of an extinct crater sunk in the sea between it and Procida,and further still we see Ischia towering up into its mountain of Epomeo. The fieldsspread dark blue along the sides of this mighty mountain, and numerous hamlets peepforth hospitable and inviting from the shade of groups of trees. So farewell, fair Procida !Thy more perfect neighbour invites us ; and we exclaim by way of adieu :
