CANOVAS TOMB IN SANJA MARIA GLORIOSA DEI FRARI. VENICE. Of THEUNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS VENICE. 73 Not far from the Rialto stands the oldest church in Venice, San Giacomo, erected inthe sixth century, if we may believe an inscription over the doorway. Nearly everychurch in Venice (and there are one hundred and two of them) is rich in art treasures, butwe are unable to do more than indicate a few of them here. The church of the Frariproduces a great impression, both by the amplitude of the space which surrounds it, andthe largeness of its dimensions. Its interior contains the proud monument to Titian, andthe imposing pyramid beneath which Canova rests. The religious order to whom thechurch belongs is that of the Franciscans. The church of Saints Giovanni e Paolo (called,in the vernacular of the Venetian populace, Zanipolo ) belongs to the Dominicans, and

We may citeMorosini and Mocenigo, Giustiniani and Loredan ; but the finest tomb of all is that ofAndrea Vendramin. The sarcophagus is placed in a lofty arched niche, adorned withcolumns supported by eagles ; a sleeping figure of the mighty Doge lies on it, and theVirtues, whose figures surround him, watch over his eternal repose. Of the other churches we may name San Rocco with its famous Scuola; IIRedentore on the Giudecca is a master-work of Palladio, who also built St. GiorgioMaggiore. Where it is possible, the churches are surrounded by a free space, but someof them are in the narrowest corners of lanes and alleys. Nay, behind the Scalzi, theGhetto stretches out. It may be now some seven hundred years ago since the Ghettowa
