(stand at the rail, station). Ventimiglia (45 ft.; Fr. Vintimille), the Roman Albium Inte-meliam, the Italian frontier-town, with 7300 inhab. and the seat ofa bishop, consists of the industrial new town, in an exposed (N.wind) situation between the station and the sea, and the pictur-esque old town on a hill to the W. of the Roia. In the old town isthe Municipio, containing a small collection of Roman antiquitiesfrom Ponte Nervia (see above). The Cathedral, near which is aBaptistery (partly of very ancient date), and the Romanesque churcholSan Michele are interesting; the columns of the latter bear Romaninscriptions. About Y2 M. to the W. lies the picturesque PortaCanarda. Above the isolated tower-like rock (Scoglio alto) on thebeach rises the former Citadel (now barracks). NERYI. W. Koute. lyJi
