Soon after quitting the station outside the Porta Nuova (p. 163)the train quits the Milan line (R. 27) and leads to the S., acrossa richly cultivated and productive plain. Fields of rice areoccasionally seen, especially near Mantua. Stat. Dossobuono,then Villafranca; here was signed the celebrated treaty betweenthe French and Aiistr:an Emperors, July 11th, 1859, which ter-minated the Italian war and was confirmed by the Peace ofZurich. About 5 M. to the N.W. lies Custozza, where the Italianswere defeated by the Austrians in 1848 and 1866. Next stationsMozzecane, Roverbella, and Mantua. The railway-station is about 2^2 M. distant from the town.Omnibuses to the hotels in 35—40 min. (1 fr.); they start fromthe hotels for the station l1^ Dr- before the departure of thetrain.
