Elle présente un noyau central à plan octogonal, surmonté d'une coupole et entièrement appuyé sur huit piliers et arcs. C'est l'un des monuments les plus représentatifs de l'architecture et de l'art byzantins en Europe occidentale. l'édifice a été pris comme modèle pour la chapelle palatine de Charlemagne, à Aix-la-Chapelle, construite de 790 à 805, autour du couronnement impérial de 800. |
