l as beautyof physical form of the men and women of Italy (andI may add those of my own country) is due to theirvaried strains of blood. To-morrow we are going to Frascati, and I willwrite you later of our trip. T. Rome, April My dear M: Villas and castles! Each day we see more andmore, all lovely, yet each with its own peculiar charmand interest. The road leading from Rome to Frascati passesthrough one of the most picturesque parts of theCampagna, and we had magnificent views of the greatClaudian Aqueduct, built in a.d. 52 by the EmperorClaudius, to bring water from the neighborhood ofSubiaco. Historic and wonderful ruins line the wholeway, and I felt much more the influence of AncientRome than that of Mediaeval Italy, though nowand again a ruined tower reminded us of robber-baron days. As one approaches the town, however,the magnificent villas recall the days of the luxuriousPrinces of the Church. Frascati in latter days, and before it, Tusculum,of which it was originally a suburb, may be spoken ofas the Versailles of Rome. Its situation on the slopeof the Alban Hills overlooking Rome is ideal. Theclimate is, and evidently has always been, unusuallyfine and seems to clearly explain the fame, first, ofTusculum and its marvellous villas of the old Romandays, and, later, of the princely palaces built for Popesand Cardinals. The Villa Aldobrandini, to which wewent immediately on entering the town, is generallyconsidered, and undoubtedly is, the most beautiful ofall the numerous villas of Frascati to-day. I believe so much in first impressions, and knowingbeforehand that I could not enter at the main gate(which is always kept shut even to the Prince himself),nevertheless I insisted upon
