Italian Railways in 2020: railway stations and length of railway lines

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The visualisation shows the situation of the Italian railways in the year 2020, taking into account the railway stations and the length of railway lines for each Italian region.

Specifically, the graph highlights the number of stations considering the categorisation proposed by RFI (Rete Ferroviaria Italiana)] through which stations are defined as ‘bronze’, ‘silver’, ‘gold’, ‘platinum’.[1]
Bronze: small stations offering regional service
Silver: small to medium-sized stations with regional and long-distance services.
Gold: medium-large stations with high frequency, often characterised by tourism, architectural and commercial potential.
Platinum: stations with very high frequentation and often located in important tourist cities.

The graph also shows the length of railway lines, comparing electrified and non-electrified lines. (The complete electrification of the railway network is an important element of the Italian infrastructure within the PNRR's objectives for the country's development)[2].

To further emphasise these data, the chart provides the area of the individual regions in order to highlight the coverage of the rail service in relation to the surface area.

The Italian regions are categorised into five main areas: Northwest Italy, Northeast Italy, Central Italy, South Italy and Insular Italy according to NUTS (Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics) 1 which divides the national territory into administrative sections for statistical purposes, also adopted by ISTAT (Istituto nazionale di Statistica)

The data used to realise the visualisation are provided by ISTAT and by ASTI(Atlante Statistico Territoriale delle Infrastrutture) by ISTAT

Original graphs were made using Rawgraphs, later edited by own user.
