Summary

[edit]
Description

The day after Tipperary are crowned All Ireland Hurling Champions we go to Tipperary Town! Rolls of linoleum, bolts of material, stacks of travelling cases this well stocked drapery, haberdashery and general goods store is a sight for sore eyes! This is the way to start a week with a shot that has just about everything.

With thanks to all of today's contributors, particularly [/photos/8468254@N02/ derangedlemur], [/photos/139877639@N08/ Rory_Sherlock], [/photos/beachcomberaustralia/ beachcomber], [/photos/gnmcauley/ Niall McAuley], and perhaps especially [/photos/66311327@N05/ B-59], we have confirmation that this French image captures a premises in "New Tipperary". As we learned previously, as with the other businesses in "New Tipperary", once the tenancy dispute was resolved, (James?) O'Neill's business likely returned to its original premises in the older part of the town. The following summary perhaps best summarises the background to this and related images:  In 1888-9, tenants of the [Tipperary Town] landlord, Arthur Smith Barry, withheld their rents in solidarity with his tenants in Co Cork. They were evicted and [...] decided to build a new town on land outside his control. The area now known [as] Dillon Street and Emmet Street in Tipperary town was the centre of this development[..]. Eventually, compromise was reached and the tenants returned to the "Old Tipperary". The ["New Tipperary"] arcade was demolished after a couple of years. — Extract from Archiseek article
