Issoudun (Indre) Musée de l'Hospice Saint-Roch. Masque du groupe Elema. Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée. XIXe siècle. Le groupe Elema s'étend le long de la côte est du Golfe de Papouasie, depuis le fleuve Purari au Cap Possession. Les masques sont fabriqués par les hommes, dans les maisons cérémonielles à l’abri du regard des femmes et des enfants. Ils sont formés d’une structure en rotin et de jonc sur laquelle est fixée une étoffe d’écorce battue, le tapa, structure végétale frappée selon une technique répandue en Océanie. Les yeux ronds, le nez long en relief, l’harmonie des pigments, rouge, blanc et noir comme les motifs triangulaires sont caractéristiques de leur style. Ce sont des masques de danse, portés au rythme du tambour, pour les cérémonies destinées à faire revivre les esprits et à initier les jeunes adultes. Les masques Kovave de forme conique, à la bouche ouverte et menaçante, sont voués à éveiller les esprits de la brousse.
