Description

Butcher’s shop, Toll Gavel, Beverley. The image this week is of a Butcher’s shop in Toll Gavel, c.1861. The man in the long white apron stood near the doorway is Israel Marshal Wilson, the butcher. He appears to be posing for the photograph along with, presumably, other staff members from the shop. Proudly displayed and hung up outside on the front of the shop are large carcasses of meat. Inside, also displayed in the centre of the window, a huge head of a bull, taking pride of place. Shops used to display fresh produce mainly outside. Today this is a rare occurrence.
