Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Isle of Iona: the abbey Iona Abbey has had a long history of erection and destruction. Columba came here and built a wooden monastery in AD563 which was burned down by the Vikings on their second attack, in 802. A replacement was built from 818, this time in stone – a little south of the original and where the present-day buildings stand. This was badly damaged by a further Viking raid in 825. Reginald MacDonald of Islay rekindled Iona's religious importance and a large abbey was build in the 1200s with further work in the 1400s. However, after the Reformation in 1560 the building gradually decayed until 1874 when the 8th Duke of Argyll commissioned and architect to preserve the ruins. In 1902 the newly established Iona Cathedral Trust embarked on the Abbey's full restoration and it is largely the results of this comparatively recent work that we see today.
