Description

"Isfandiyar slays Arjasp, King of Turan", made in 1603 in India. Watercolor, gold, and ink on paper. Part of the exhibit "Art and Stories of Mughal India" at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio. Painting attributed to Haidar Kashmiri.

Hakīm Abul-Qāsim Firdawsī Tūsī was a Persian poet who lived from 934 to 1020 AD. He wrote the "Shah-nama" (The Book of Kings) between 977 and 1010. The poem -- the national poem of Iran -- is broken into three sections: The mythic age, the heroic age, and the historic age. The heroic age covers about two-thirds of the work, and is chiefly about a wide range of Persian heroes who perform a wide range of physical, moral, and religious works.

This image is from the section on the heroic age. Isfandiyar is destined to become Shah of Iran, aided by his heroic warrior Rustam. Arjasp, king of Turan, killed Isfandiyar's father and kidnapped his sisters. Isfandiyar disguised himself as a merchant and gained access to Arjasp's fort. He then fought his way to the king, and slew him.
