| Description |
NASA image acquired August 31, 2012 This satellite image shows Tropical Depression Isaac as it moved from the Gulf Coast towards the central United States. It was collected on August 31, 2012, at about 2:00 a.m. Central Daylight Time by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) aboard Suomi-NPP. In addition to clouds illuminated by a nearly-full moon, the lights of cities and towns stand out from the darker landscape. Credit: NASA Earth Observatory image by Jesse Allen and Robert Simmon, using VIIRS Day-Night Band data from the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP). Suomi NPP is the result of a partnership between NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Department of Defense. NASA Goddard Space Flight Center enables NASA’s mission through four scientific endeavors: Earth Science, Heliophysics, Solar System Exploration, and Astrophysics.
