Summary

[edit]
Description

In the foreground, built in 1374-1375 during the Aydinid period (1308-1426), this mosque was designed by Samli Dimisklioglu Ali. The mosque features a stone exterior with a vaulted roof and two domes at the center of the building, a partially truncated minaret, and a cloister on the north side of the building, surrounding a large courtyard. The mosque was in ruins by the 19th Century, but has since undergone restoration, and is presently in use as a mosque.

In the background, built in the 500s AD by the Byzantine Empire, this fortress stands north of the ruins of the Church of Saint John, and was rebuilt during the Aydinid period (1308-1426) and the subsequent Ottoman period. The fortress is built of stone with crenellations, large towers, a mosque in the central courtyard, and the ruins of several buildings that were once located within the fort, demolished after it fell into disuse. Today, the fort is an archaeological site and a minor tourist attraction, demonstrating the post-antiquity history of what was once the location of the ancient city of Ephesus.
