Summary
[edit]DescriptionIrrigation pipe - geograph.org.uk - 449947.jpg |
English: Irrigation pipe. On this light, sandy soil overlying chalk, irrigation is necessary for most crops apart from cereals and sugar beet. Water is pumped from boreholes into the chalk and distributed around the fields through a permanent underground network and then taken to exactly where needed through 10m pipes connected as in this picture. Here is a field of onions where irrigation was needed early in the growing season after the exceptionally dry spring. The almost non-stop rain from 27–29 May has been a huge relief to the farmers. |
