Summary
[edit]DescriptionIronstone (Ferriferous Ore, Allegheny Group, Middle Pennsylvanian; Hanging Rock Iron Region, southern Ohio, USA) 4 (49212027307).jpg |
Weathered ironstone from the Pennsylvanian of Ohio. (Orton Geology Museum, Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, USA) Seen here is a vintage type of iron ore from southern Ohio's famous Hanging Rock Iron Region (see: geosurvey.ohiodnr.gov/portals/geosurvey/PDFs/Newsletter/W...). It was active as an iron-producing area in the 1800s to early 1900s. The rock is composed of reddish hematite, brownish goethite, and yellowish-brown limonite. This is not the primary mineralogy of the ironstone - these iron oxide minerals were produced by weathering and oxidative alteration of a siderite ironstone precursor at or near the surface. Siderite is iron carbonate (FeCO3). From accompanying signage: Limonite & Hematite Vanport Limestone The Vanport Limestone is the unit that contains the flint at Flint Ridge. In southern Ohio, the Vanport contained an iron ore, called the Ferriferous Ore, which was the chief ore of the Hanging Rock Iron Region. The ore was 1 to 4 feet thick, and originally was iron carbonate, but weathering near the surface changed it to limonite.
