Title |
Iron axehead |
||
Description |
English: Iron wood cutters axe head. This type of axe would have had many uses ranging from boat building to house building; the style has changed little since the Roman period and therefore these axes can be difficult to date. The axe has a wedge shaped section and a sub-triangular blade; the upper edge of the blade is inclined upwards and is slightly curved and the lower edge is angled downwards and is slightly convex. The socket of the axe head is an elongated triangle shape. This example is similar in shape to a number of examples in the London Museum Medieval Catalogue, Fig.11, Type IVb and Fig. 13, No. 6 which are dated to between the 13th –16th century. This example is smaller in size than the medieval examples and is in good condition for an Iron artefact. It therefore probably dates to the post medieval period when this style continued in use. The axe head weighs 163.6g and measures 95.2mm in length, 54.3mm in width (from the top to the bottom of the blade) and 22.7mm in thickness. |
