Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Iron Bridge at Hawkesbury Junction, Coventry Canal The whole area of Hawkesbury Junction is now a designated Conservation Area. The cast iron bridge, beautifully preserved and maintained, proudly boasts of its manufacture at the Britannia Foundry, Derby in 1837. Behind the camera is a pub, and a stop-lock guards the water of the Oxford Canal. New housing is spreading along the north side of the Coventry Canal. When this stretch of the Oxford Canal was constructed in 1771 it carried on westwards another mile or so to Longford, and there was no junction here. Because of the usual arguments between companies, the Coventry Canal, seen here beyond the bridge, ran parallel to the earlier planned Oxford, and unconnected just a few metres apart for a mile or so. By 1777 a court injunction compelled the companies to build a junction, but this was at Longford, not here. In 1803 the first junction at Hawkesbury was cut, then it was widened in 1836 and bridged as it is now in 1837. The Google Maps satellite image between here and Longford is fascinating, some evidence of the Oxford's course to Longford can just be seen.
