Title |
Iron Age vessel: Bucket mount |
||
Description |
English: A complete cast copper alloy anthropomorphic bucket or vessel mount dating to the Late Iron Age (c. 100 BC - AD 43). The mount is in the form of a human male's head with headdress or helmet and possible armour over the upper chest area; the shoulders of the head are partially included but the whole neck is depicted and so is an oval section of the chest and back. The head wears what appears to be a crested helmet; a large groove over and above the forehead may indicate a the absence of a decorative insert. The facial features of the male are well rendered, with large lentoid eyes with raised central eye area but with hollow sockets which may have have held red enamel, a fragment of which survives in the left socket. The nose is raised and is connected to the continuous brow ridges. The ears are small and rounded. The mouth protrudes slightly from the face and is set in a straight line, appearing expressionless. Beneath the chin on the upper neck is a triangular feature, possibly intended to be a beard.
Unlike the Aylesford (Kent) example, the handle for this bucket appears to be copper-alloy, not formed by wrapping copper alloy around a central iron rod (Stead 1971:268). The handle of the Hampshire example does have a hollow centre however it is unclear whether another element was within; no trace of any other substance is retained. |
