Title
Iron Age toggle fastener with enamel
Description
English: Iron Age toggle; cast copper alloy toggle fastener with remains of enamel, dating to the early 1st century AD. The toggle has a single ‘boss and petal’ head, meaning that it has a pointed oval shape with a central, circular, domed boss. The central boss is surrounded by an indented ring which is inlaid with enamel. The enamel is currently a faded red colour, although it may originally have been a different colour. There is a sturdy, circular shaft emerging from the centre of the back face of the toggle head and this opens out to form a roughly oval-shaped loop. This is rather unusual, since most Iron Age toggle fasteners have a loop which extends to the side in the same plane as the head, but it is not unheard of.

Length (head) 19.6mm, width (head) 12.3mm, thickness (front of head to back of loop) 17.5mm, weight 5.6g

Refs: see the toggle fasteners in Mills, page 68-69 for examples with similarly-shaped boss and petal heads.

Page 87 of Bailey’s “Buttons & Fasteners” has further examples, including figure 10.9 which has a loop in the perpendicular plane to the head.
