Iron Age toggle / horse harness cheek fitting |

Description |
English: Iron age harness toggle; cast copper alloy horse harness cheek piece or toggle with enamelled decoration dating from the 1st century BC or early 1st century AD. The toggle is a long bar with circular cross section at the terminals. In the centre it is flattened and expanded, at which point it is also pierced with a rounded, rectangular slot, presumably for a strap to pass through. One face is decorated with incised decoration and inlaid panels of enamel. In the centre are four square panels, alternately filled with the remains of enamel, which is now red and a pale white-green in colour. This design is flanked by a double incised line, which can be seen on one side to enclose a zig-zag line, although the other side is too worn to make out the pattern. There is then a curved, triangular panel of red enamel with an incised 'V' behind it. At the ends of the bar there is another triangular panel, this time filled with the white-green material. The surface of the metal has a pale grey-green patina, but there are many patches where the surface is missing. The toggle is currently in two pieces. See page 53 and the illustration of object 4 on plate XIII, annotated on page 62 and referred to as a toggle. Fragment 1 (first finder): Length 58.4mm, width 14.2mm, thickness 16.6mm, weight 24.46g Fragment 2 (second finder): Length 54.6mm, width 12.8mm, thickness 16.9mm, weight 22.21g Total: Length 106.3mm, width 14.2mm, thickness 16.9mm, weight 46.67g |
