Title
Iron Age to Late Medieval: Stone pestle
Description
English: A fragment of a ground stone pestle of probable Roman date.

The pestle is sub rectangular in plan, and rectangular in cross section. It is broadly sub cyclindrical in shape. It has been made from a fine grained rock, probably a granite. The lower surface exhibits signs of polishing due to wear. An old fracture is present on the grinding surface, which could have lead to its disposal. A more recent break across the shaft is present.

It measures 61.89mm in length, 53.79mm wide and 32.89mm thick. It weighs 171.4 grams.

Due to the functional nature of this artefact, it is hard to accurately date it. As it has been found in conjunction with a significant quantity of Roman pottery (mainly local greywares), it is mostly likely Roman in date. However it could date from the Iron Age up until the Late Medieval period (800 BC to 1600 AD).
