Title
Iron Age or Roman pestle (plan)
Description
English: Cast copper-alloy cosmetic pestle. Late iron age or Roman. Mass: 1.3g; width: 26.6mm; thickness: 2.8mm (centre of the blade). Large centre-loop with a crescentic blade with broken tips. The blade has a sub-oval cross section, with an almost pointed blade end. Green patina. In ‘Cosmetic sets from Late Iron Age and Roman Britain’, in Britannia, Volume 16, 1985, pages 172 & 175, Jackson comments that few ‘cosmetic sets’ or their component parts are closely and securely dated, but many do seem to fall in to the 1st/ 2nd century AD. Due to possibly being suspended from the waist, casual or accidental losses must have been a problem (ibid. pages 169-172).
