Title
Iron Age or Roman harness fitting; terret ring with three double bead expansions
Description
English: Iron age harness fitting; cast copper alloy terret ring of late Iron Age or early Roman date (probably 1st century AD). The ring is a broad oval shape, attached at the bottom to an integral, flat, rectangular base plate. The base has the remains of two small knops extending from its underside. Comparison with parallel examples suggests that these knops may have joined to form a small, rectangular loop beneath the larger oval loop. The ring is decorated with three sets of double bead projections, one in the centre at the top and the others at the side apices of the oval loop. The whole has an even, thick, pale green patina over its surface. Height (total) 39.6mm, width (span of loop) 42.2mm, thickness (loop at top projection) 5.0mm, thickness (loop without projections) 2.5mm, length (base plate) 28.4mm, width (base plate) 15.5mm, thickness (base plate without knops) 3.6mm, weight 19.64g
