Title
Iron Age knobbled bracelet
Description
English: A possible cast copper alloy bracelet (bangle or armlet) of beaded type of late Iron Age to early Roman date. The object is fragmentry as both ends appear to have old patinated breaks. In plan the bracelet is a curved rod formed of three conjoined spherical knobs. The knobs have an opening on the inner side and are hollow. They are roughly cast with one less hollowed than the others. They are joined by short plain necks. The knops are heavily corroded and have very rough surfaces. Small amounts of the original smooth surface remain in the necks between them. Measures 46.03mm x 13.81mm and is 10.35mm thick; weighs 20.40gms. Fox (Fox, C. 1958 Pattern and Purpose: A Survey of Early Celtic Art in Britain National Museum of Wales, Cardiff) illustrates similarly decorated bracelets, for example Plates 2 and 31 which are dated to the Iron Age period; other similar examples have however been excavated in Roman period graves at Colchester. Very similar looking examples to this piece are recorded on the database e.g. NMGW-97F033 and WMID-933711. However all these examples have solid rather than hollow backs.
