Title |
Iron Age coins: Hoard of Catuvellauni Staters |
||
Description |
English: All of the coins are Iron Age coins, specifically of the 'North Eastern' regional series that is often ascribed to the Corieltavi tribe. The coins comprise three basic types; the so-called "South Ferriby", "Domino" and "Kite" type staters. All were produced between about 40 BC and AD 20/30, at location(s) within the modern counties of Lincolnshire/North Lincolnshire.

In fact analysis of similar types of coin in the British Museum collection would suggest that the above coins comprise around 40% gold and 10% silver, with the rest being copper. They are clearly more than 300 years old. Given the types listed here, and the reported circumstances of discovery, there is little doubt that they represented a single deposit when buried in antiquity. Conclusion: In my opinion these coins constitutes a prima facie case of treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act (1996). Ian Leins |
