Title |
Iron Age coin: quarter stater of Belgae type |
||
Description |
English: An Iron Age 'early uninscribed' gold quarter stater of the Belgae, dating to c.65-40 BC.
An example of Chris Rudd's 'Danebury Scrolls' type (ABC 791, BMC 539) with an additional ring on the back of the horse. Obverse: Scroll-like flourishes around central cogwheel sun. Reverse: Horse right, ring and wheel above, floral sun below There are 7 similar coins recorded on the database (HAMP-69AA0A, WILT-0C6176, HAMP-6A23A8, HAMP-277D13, HAMP3872, HAMP-104634, HAMP-FACBB6) with 5 examples known elsewhere (detailed in the record for HAMP-69AA0A). All known coins are from Hampshire, and may have a closer origin point: in record HAMP-104634 Rob Webley writes: Bean (2000, 69) notes at the time he wrote that there were only three findspots known for the wider type - his QcT3 (this coin is of his sub-type QcT3-3). He also posits that 'from the few coins available there is the suggestion that this typologically close group may have been centred on Hampshire'. Measurements: 10.12mm diameter, 1.4mm thickness, weight 1.15g. |
